How do I Find Time to Write?

Writers often ask me, how am I able to publish a novel, every single year. I have four works published in four years.

My answer is consistency and discipline. I make time to work on my manuscripts. I make time to write. As a wife and mother of a teenager, two small boys, and a newborn, I have as many obligations and responsibilities as anyone. How I utilize my time to get things done, is key.

Take a time assessment. What do you spend a lot of time doing? What can you move around. For me, it was sacrificing television. It was the one thing during my day, that I could swap for writing.

In the advent of social media, you would be surprised as to how much time you actually have to write. Ever time yourself while on FaceBook, Instagram, or YouTube? You could spend hours on there, watching videos, reading memes, and chatting with old friends. Looking for time to write? Come off Social Media.

To be better disciplined, I suggest placing your phone on the charger, in another room. We are so conditioned to jump every time an alert sounds on our phone. It can be huge distraction when you are trying to concentrate and create. If your phone is too easily accessible, you may be tempted to look at it.

We have been conditioned to spend our downtime looking at our phone. Anytime there is a lull in our day, we pick up the phone and surf newsfeed. If we, as writers, condition ourselves to work on our manuscripts during our downtime, imagine how many works we could produce and publish?

The journey of 100, 000 words begins with just one word. A commitment to writing produces published works. There is no real formula, other than you make the choice to write today, tomorrow, and the next.

The goal in the initial draft is to just write. Be consistent with this method and eventually, your story should be completed.
